Cleaning Spills & Spots:

Wool:

While wool rugs naturally resist stains, they aren’t completely stain-proof. The best way to manage spots and spills is to address them right away. For most everyday spills, a gentle clean with water, following these steps, is usually all that’s needed.

  1. Scoop up solids immediately. Avoid pushing them into the rug pile.
  2. Blot the spill with a clean white cloth or paper towel. Work from the outside towards the centre to avoid spreading it further.
  3. Never rub a wet spill - this could worsen the stain/spill and damage your rug.
  4. Be careful not to over wet or submerge the rug in water or other liquids.

For stronger stains, please refer to our stains guide below for advice.

Wool Rugs Stains Guide

Use the following steps and table to find the best solution for the stain.
Take action to contain the spill and ensure the area is dry before proceeding to the next step.
  1. Find the recommended solution from the table below.
  2. It is recommended to test the cleaning solution on a hidden area of the rug first.
  3. Apply the solution to a white cloth. Work from the edges to the inside to prevent the stain spreading further.
  4. Continue with the solution until there is no further transfer to the cloth. You don't need to use any of the alternative methods if the first solution works.
  5. Finally, dab the affected area with cold water and blot away until all of the solution and water has been removed. Dry the area by applying a layer of clean white paper towels to the area and weigh them down.
  6. If the stain is still visible after these treatments, contact a professional cleaning company for advice.

Method

  1. Cold water
  2. Mixture of white vinegar and water (1:1 ratio)
  3. 1 tsp of mild laundry detergent suitable for wool and 1 tsp of white vinegar in 1 litre of warm water
  4. Chill with either ice cubes in a bag or with an aerosol freezing agent. Once frozen, remove gum by picking or scraping off
  5. Clear household disinfectant
  6. Nail polish remover (should not contain lanolin)
  7. Vacuum clean
  8. Surgical alcohol
  9. Rinse with warm water
  10. Seek assistance from a professional carpet cleaner

Managing wool's natural characteristics:

Shedding - Wool rugs can shed loose fibres, particularly in high traffic areas in the first 3-4 months after purchase. This is a natural characteristic and will diminish over time with regular vacuuming. Vacuum regularly to prevent the fibres from settling into the rug.

Pop-ups: Short fibres may pop up while the rug settles. These can be gently trimmed or pushed back through. Do not pull the tuft or it could leave a hole in the rug.

Room Humidity: Wool acts as a natural air purifier by absorbing moisture from the air. However, it is important to maintain balanced humidity levels in the room to prevent the rug from absorbing too much moisture. Avoid placing wool rugs in areas prone to excessive moisture (such as bathrooms or basements), and ensure spills are dried quickly.

Bamboo Silk & Wool:

Applicable only if the rug has been treated with our Premium Surface Protection. For untreated rugs, please contact a professional rug cleaner.
  1. For liquid spills, absorb as much of the liquid as possible with a thick absorbent cloth. For solid spills, use a spatula to scoop up and remove as much of the soiling as possible.
  2. Once the spill has been removed, spray the remainder with the spot cleaner provided on delivery, then blot with a thick, absorbent cloth. Vacuum 12 hours later and repeat if necessary. Please note that for urine spills, your Bamboo Silk & Wool rug must be professionally cleaned.

Jute:

  1. For liquid spills, absorb as much of the liquid as possible with a thick absorbent cloth. For solid spills, use a spatula to scoop up and remove as much of the soiling as possible.
  2. Once the spill has been removed, pour cold water over the stain to lightly cover it, then blot with a thick, absorbent cloth. Repeat this process until the stain has gone.
  3. If the stain persists, use a jute safe spot cleaner. Spray lightly over the stain, wait a few moments, then blot with a damp cloth. Repeat until the stain is gone, then vacuum once dry.

Regular Vacuuming:

The most important step to maintaining your Nodi rug is regular vacuuming. Vacuum at least once a week in high traffic areas and at least every three months under infrequently moved furniture. It is recommended to use a non-rotating suction head with your vacuum as rotating brushes can be harsh on surfaces. If you do use a rotating brush occasionally, ensure it is not touching the rug pile.

Premium Surface Protection:

We highly recommend adding Premium Surface Protection to every Nodi rug,

Premium Surface Protection treatments create a protective barrier that reduces the impact of UVA and UVB rays, helping to preserve the rug's colour and appearance for longer. Unlike other products, Premium Surface Protection penetrates and coats each fibre, eliminating the need for reapplication after cleaning and lasting through 10 commercial cleans.

This protection is applied in a simple, one-time treatment by an approved premium surface protection applicator. All rug orders with Premium Surface Protection are treated before dispatch. Please note this may add a few extra days to our standard delivery time frame.

Professional Cleaning:

We recommend your Nodi rug is professionally cleaned every 12-18 months, or more often in high traffic areas. For professional rug cleaning, we recommend Premium Surface Protection NZ.

Protection from Sunlight:

New Zealand's climate, with its strong UV rays, makes rugs, particularly wool, more susceptible to fading when exposed to direct sunlight. To reduce fading, it’s important to use curtains, blinds, or UV window treatments that limit sun exposure, especially during the peak hours of sunlight. Regularly rotating rugs and furniture can also prevent uneven fading in specific areas that receive more sunlight throughout the day.

Rug Underlay Instructions:

Ensure your rug stays secure and comfortable with our premium underlay, designed to prevent slipping and provide extra cushioning underfoot. Follow these steps for proper placement:

Before you begin:

  • Your underlay will arrive slightly smaller than your rug to ensure it is not visible underneath.
  • It may arrive in multiple pieces—this is normal and simplifies installation. Do not overlap the pieces, as this will create bumps under your rug.

Step 1: Prepare your space

  1. Clear the space of all furniture.
  2. If laying on hard flooring, thoroughly clean and dry the surface to ensure the underlay grips securely. Any dust or dirt will reduce its effectiveness.

Step 2: Position the Underlay

  1. Decide on the placement of your rug.
  2. Lay the underlay in the center of the area where the rug will go:
    • For hard floors (marble, hardwood, ceramic, vinyl, stone): place the grey side down.
    • For carpeted floors: place the white side down.
  3. Remove the plastic protective sheet to expose the grip finish before proceeding.

Step 3: Place the Rug

  1. Position your rolled-up rug slightly above the top edge of the underlay.
  2. Unroll the rug slowly over the underlay.
  3. Smooth out any bumps or edges to ensure the rug lays flat.
  4. Note: It’s normal for the rug to have minor kinks from being rolled up, which will naturally smooth out over time.

Follow these guidelines for cleaning, stain prevention, and general maintenance.

However, it is important to maintain balanced humidity levels in the room to prevent the carpet from absorbing too much moisture. Avoid placing wool carpet in areas prone to excessive moisture (such as bathrooms or basements), and ensure spills are dried quickly.

General Tips:

Furniture dents: To avoid permanent dents from heavy furniture, use furniture cups and/or periodically move furniture slightly to re-distribute the weight. You can lift the fibres of a dented area by gently steaming and then brushing the pile back into place.

Insect Prevention:

Nodi products are not guaranteed against insect attack, including carpet beetles. Our wool products are crafted from natural fibres, which are inherently susceptible to insect risks due to the organic materials used. While all Nodi wool products are treated with Permethrin to deter insects, this treatment does not guarantee insect-proof protection, nor does it prevent them from entering your home. Effective prevention relies on regular, thorough cleaning practices.

Nodi is not responsible for the introduction of the moth or insect into the premises. Local environmental factors that have created this circumstance are not within our control. Insect attacks on natural fibre products, like wool, are a normal risk and can be unpredictable. While the Permethrin treatment deters pests, it does not eliminate the possibility of an infestation. In areas where beetles and moths have developed a tolerance, some insects may persist despite treatment. The deterrent works only when insects ingest the carpet fibres, which can halt further spreading, though it may result in minor fibre loss. Good care and maintenance practices are essential for maintaining protection.

Regular, thorough cleaning can reduce the risk of infestation and help identify early signs. Vacuuming close to skirting boards using a nozzle attachment is recommended, as regular vacuum heads may miss these edges. Cleaning under beds and furniture is also essential for maintaining carpet condition and reducing risk.

In the event of minor infestation, follow these steps:

  1. Thoroughly vacuum the area, spraying the vacuum contents with insecticide before disposal.
  2. Treat the affected area (plus 15cm beyond) with an insecticidal aerosol or powder following manufacturer instructions.
  3. If insects persist, contact a professional pest control service.

Should a wider infestation be apparent, it is recommended to seek professional extermination to protect the carpet and other furnishings from further damage. Carpet beetles, which commonly target natural fibres, can affect various home textiles, including apparel, curtains, and upholstery, so a comprehensive approach is advised to safeguard all items.

After a professional extermination, damaged carpet can sometimes be stretched and trimmed to remove the affected section, especially near skirting boards. In some cases, carpet from another room may be used to repair the impacted area, achieving a satisfactory restoration.

Before installing new carpet in areas where insects have previously been a problem, applying a safe spray along skirting boards may help prevent future issues

Any prevention, extermination or remedial works (e.g. re-stretching) are the responsibility of the customer.
