The best way to manage spots and spills is to address them right away. For most everyday spills, a gentle clean with water, following these steps, is usually all that’s needed.
- Scoop up solids immediately. Avoid pushing them into the rug pile.
- Blot the spill with a clean white cloth or paper towel. Work from the outside towards the centre to avoid spreading it further.
- Never rub a wet spill - this could worsen the stain/spill and damage your rug.
- Be careful not to over wet or submerge the rug in water or other liquids.
- Do not let moisture sit on the rug for extended periods, as mildew may begin to form. Clean spills and stains as soon as possible after occurrence.
For stronger stains, please refer to our stains guide below for advice.
Use the following steps and table to find the best solution for the stain. Take action to contain the spill and ensure the area is dry before proceeding to the next step.
- Find the recommended solution from the table below.
- It is recommended to test the cleaning solution on a hidden area of the rug first.
- Apply the solution to a white cloth. Work from the edges to the inside to prevent the stain spreading further.
- Continue with the solution until there is no further transfer to the cloth. You don’t need to use any of the alternative methods if the first solution works.
- Finally, dab the affected area with cold water and blot away until all the solution and water has been removed. Dry the area by applying a layer of clean white paper towels to the area and weigh them down.
- Lay the rug flat to dry. If drying under the sun, place the rug face down to protect the fibres.
- If the stain is still visible after these treatments, contact a professional cleaning company for advice.
If a solution is not available for your rug in the table below, we recommend seeking advice from a professional cleaning company who are experienced in cleaning natural fibre rugs.

SHEDDING: Natural fibre rugs can shed loose fibres, particularly in high traffic areas in the first 3-4 months after installation. This is a natural characteristic and will diminish over time with regular vacuuming. Vacuum regularly to prevent the fibres from settling into the rug.
POP-UPS: Short fibres may pop up while the rug settles. These can be gently trimmed or pushed back through. Do not pull the tuft or it could leave a hole. A small amount of latex glue can help securing the tuft back in place, please contact our team for guidance on the best application of latex.
ROOM HUMIDITY: Wool acts as a natural air purifier by absorbing moisture from the air. However, it is important to maintain balanced humidity levels in the room to prevent the carpet from absorbing too much moisture. Avoid placing wool rugs in areas prone to excessive moisture (such as bathrooms or basements), and ensure spills are dried quickly.
Bamboo Silk & Wool rugs are delicate and sensitive to moisture and chemicals. They require special care and maintenance for cleaning stains. It's advisable to test any cleaning solution on a small, hidden area before full application. Nodi recommends the Wonderspot Cleaner for use on our Bamboo Silk & Wool rugs to remove stains, for a full clean contact a professional rug cleaner.
The most important step to maintaining your Nodi rug is regular vacuuming. Vacuum at least once a week in high traffic areas and at least every three months under infrequently moved furniture. It is recommended to use a non-rotating suction head with your vacuum as rotating brushes can be harsh on surfaces. If you do use a rotating brush occasionally, ensure it is not touching the rug pile.
For Jute rugs with a loop finish, it is advisable to vacuum across the width, rather than the length of the rug. This will help maintain the loops’ structure and reduce stress on the pile.
We highly recommend adding Premium Surface Protection to every Nodi rug. Premium Surface Protection treatments create a protective barrier that reduces the impact of UVA and UVB rays, helping to preserve the carpet’s colour and appearance for longer. Unlike other products, Premium Surface Protection penetrates and coats each fibre, eliminating the need for reapplication after cleaning and lasting through 10 commercial cleans. This protection is applied in a simple, one-time treatment by an approved premium surface protection applicator.
We recommend your Nodi rug is professionally cleaned every 12-18 months, or more often in high traffic areas, using professional cleaners experienced with natural fibre rugs.
Nodi recommends Premium Surface Protection NZ for PSP protection and professional cleaning services.
New Zealand’s climate, with its strong UV rays, makes rugs, particularly wool and wool blends, more susceptible to fading when exposed to direct sunlight. To reduce fading, it’s important to use curtains, blinds, or UV window treatments that limit sun exposure, especially during the peak hours of sunlight.
Placing an underlay underneath your rug can prevent slipping and edges flicking up, provide cushioning and allow air circulation which helps in reducing risk of moisture build-up.
Follow these steps for proper placement:
Before you begin:
- Your underlay will arrive slightly smaller than your rug to ensure it is not visible underneath.
- It may arrive in multiple pieces—this is normal and simplifies installation. Do not overlap the pieces, as this will create bumps under your rug.
Step 1: Prepare your space
- Clear the space of all furniture.
- If laying on hard flooring, thoroughly clean and dry the surface to ensure the underlay grips securely. Any dust or dirt will reduce its effectiveness.
Step 2: Position the Underlay
- Decide on the placement of your rug.
- Lay the underlay in the center of the area where the rug will go:
- For hard floors (marble, hardwood, ceramic, vinyl, stone): place the grey side down.
- For carpeted floors: place the white side down.
- Remove the plastic protective sheet to expose the grip finish before proceeding.
Step 3: Place the Rug
- Position your rolled-up rug slightly above the top edge of the underlay.
- Unroll the rug slowly over the underlay.
- Smooth out any bumps or edges to ensure the rug lays flat.
- Note: It’s normal for the rug to have minor kinks from being rolled up, which will naturally smooth out over time.
To avoid permanent dents from heavy furniture, use furniture cups and/or periodically move furniture slightly to re-distribute the weight. You can lift the fibres of a dented area by gently steaming and then brushing the pile back into place.

Nodi products are not guaranteed against insect attack, including carpet beetles. Our wool products are woven from natural fibres, which are inherently susceptible to insect risks due to the organic materials used. While all Nodi wool products are treated with Permethrin to deter insects, this treatment does not guarantee insect-proof protection, nor does it prevent them from entering your home. Effective prevention relies on regular, thorough cleaning practices.
