Manufacturing defects are defined as flaws or defects that occur during the production process and cause the rug to fail to meet its intended quality and performance standards.

Handwoven Rugs natural characteristics
The following are common characteristics of hand-woven rugs and are not considered manufacturing defects.
APPEARANCE RETENTION
All rugs will change appearance over time. Pile will flatten to some extent due to normal use. Regular vacuuming and periodic professional cleaning will reduce the degree of flattening. Matting is a wear-induced characteristic that is seen as the merging together of fibre tufts to the stage where they may become less defined. Matting occurs in all rugs to some extent and is not considered a manufacturing defect.
ABSORPTION & DISCOLOURATION
Jute is highly absorbent and can stain or discolour when exposed to liquids,
particularly water. Care should be taken to avoid spills, and our care guide gives steps to effectively deal with a spill.
CUT PILE | PERMANENT PILE REVERSAL
Also known as Shading, is a phenomenon that is not fully understood. It is believed to occur when the pile changes direction, affecting how light is reflected or absorbed, similar to velvet fabrics. This is a natural characteristic and not a manufacturing fault, and it does not impact the rug’s performance. We recommend discussing this feature with your NODI representative when selecting a cut pile rug.
COLOUR FADING
Like all textiles, exposure to sunlight can cause rugs to fade over time, especially natural fibre rugs. This is an important consideration when selecting a rug for your room. We recommend applying premium surface protection to decrease the risk of fading, as well as the use of curtains or UV window treatments in rooms with strong sunlight exposure. We also recommend rotating your rug often for even colour fade.
COLOUR VARIATION
The natural colour of jute can vary significantly between light and dark tones, and some rugs may have a mix of both. This is due to the natural variation in jute fibres at harvest and is a natural characteristic of a jute rug.
LIGHT REFLECTION & APPEARANCE CHANGES
Bamboo silk has a natural sheen that reflects light, meaning the rug
may appear lighter or darker depending on the viewing
angle and light source. This is an inherent property of the
fibre and can create the appearance of colour variation
that resemble tracking.
POP-UPS
Short fibres may pop up while the rug settles, this is common in handwoven products and particularly in woollen loop pile construction and Jute range. These can be trimmed or pushed back through. Do not pull the fibre or it could leave a hole.
PILLING
Pilling occurs when fibres become loose and form small balls or pills on the surface, especially in high-traffic areas. Regular maintenance and proper vacuuming can help
manage pilling, which is a normal occurrence rather than a
defect.
SHEDDING
Shedding, or Fluffing, is most noticeable in the first few months after installation, as loose fibres left over from the manufacturing process come to the surface. This is
common with new jute rugs and wool products - particularly with cut pile construction. This is normal and typically subsides with regular vacuuming over time.
TRACKING
Tracking is the imprint left by footprints on your rug. This is common on cut pile surfaces and usually disappears after a thorough vacuum; however, it will reappear after the rug is walked on again. This is seen more often in high traffic areas such as doorways and hallways.
