In Residence: Greta van der Star

Our In Residence series celebrates the real life that unfolds with Nodi underfoot. The playful, the ritualistic and the beautifully messy moments that make a space feel truly lived in.

In our first edition, we step inside the sun-soaked bedroom of photographer Greta van der Star. It’s a sanctuary for her and her family, where sunlight spills through windows and our Chunky Rib Wool Rug in Oatmeal adds a soft, grounding warmth.

How would you describe the mood of the space? Any feelings or intentions you wanted to evoke when styling it?

The bedroom is my sanctuary, it’s set up for comfort and deep rest. One side of the room is entirely glass, and looks out to Kauri and Rimu trees. Sunlight pours through the windows for most of the day making the outside view feel as much a part of the room as anything inside. We wanted it to feel spacious, so we’ve kept furniture minimal. We’ve just redone the floors and still need to hang our art, we normally have beautiful pieces by friends Raukura Turei and Henrietta Harris that warm the space even more.

What drew you to the Chunky Rib Wool Rug in Oatmeal?

The Oatmeal really softened the dark timber wall. We have a lot of light coming in from one side, but it can feel dark with the plywood and anything too heavy colour-wise. It’s added a beautiful lightness and warmth to the space and has made getting out of bed this winter so much easier!

What are some of your favourite rituals or slow moments at home?

Every morning my son climbs into bed with whatever book we’re working through (currently The Faraway Tree), while Tim makes our morning pot of sencha. We’ll cuddle up and read a chapter of the book before doing anything else. It’s such a gentle start to the day.

If your home had a soundtrack, what song would be playing in this room?

It's hard to choose one! We collect vinyl on our travels so at the moment on repeat we have Jessica Pratt, some Haitian recordings by Maya Deren and Nala Sinephro. A very eclectic mix!
