The Somerset House, a New York-based interior design studio, gallery, and store, is known for its considered approach and curated mix of distinctive, high-quality pieces that turn interiors into artful expressions. We were honoured to collaborate with founder Alan Eckstein, placing a selection of our Bamboo Silk & Wool rugs in his showroom, where every piece speaks to craft and intention. We sat down with Alan to explore his design philosophy, creative process, and what sets Somerset House apart.

Can you share the story behind The Somerset House, and what inspired you to create a space that blends studio, gallery & store?

I was working in fashion for many years while moonlighting as a home stager-styling homes for real estate. I was mostly buying vintage pieces to spruce up homes to sell on the market.

Covid hit and I suddenly had a ton of furniture wrapped up in storage. I asked a developer that had empty retail space to consider doing a revenue share type lease and thankfully, they agreed. I was very inspired by galleries like Wyeth in the Hamptons, a legendary streetwear store called Union (which is still around today but only in LA), and your standard classic record stores.

I wanted to create something that represented all of the things that I love. The showroom serves as a place for me to experiment with design like a lab.

What kind of atmosphere did you set out to create?

Warm, eclectic with some design twists and experiments.

Why is craftsmanship important to the aesthetic and experience of your space?

I believe craftsmanship is the ultimate luxury.It's finite, individualistic and involves true on the job experience. I'm personally drawn to the different levels of craft. We value things that have the individualistic characteristics that you could never get with some of the newer technology. I love how the craftsmanship shines through, you can really see that feel in our showroom.

What drew you to our Bamboo Silk & Wool rugs, and how do you see them complimenting the other pieces in your showroom?

I love a rug that both takes over a space and fades into the background. The Bamboo Silk & Wool Rug brings an elevated sense of coziness and it pairs beautifully with the textures we’ve layered throughout Somerset. The handfeel is soft, but there’s a real weight and structure to it. These rugs ground a room in the best possible way.
